2023 Blank Canvas Marlborough Gruner Veltliner

£22.50

“A focused and intense package of scents with a white herb and radish note, citrus and white pineapple and an apple twist quality deliver a striking aromas. Dry, taut and new with flavours on the palate a mirror of the bouquet, high acidity with a fresh herb quality and peppery phenolics. Delicious, a lovely aperitif option or with fresh clam or mussel dishes.”

94 Points, Cameron Douglas MS

“The 2023 Grüner Veltliner was the first wine made at Blank Canvas. The wine is textural and floral, with orange oil, lavender, wet stone and preserved lemon rind. The wine is structured and chalky, with a savory drift of phenolics through the middle palate, which draws out the fruit and exotic spice through the finish. I love the acidity here; it’s coiled and floral. This is a lovely wine.”

93 Points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

Full screwcapped bottle 1,248 g. A complicated vintage with poor weather at flowering, quite a lot of rain in late summer and early autumn, and cold nights. Great weather going into the harvest. The fruit was hand-picked from two vineyards, one in Central Wairau and one in Brancott Valley, both on alluvial loams and gravels. Fermented mainly in 500-litre French oak puncheons plus a smaller part in stainless steel. It spent 10 months maturing on fine lees. No malo. TA 6 g/l, pH 3.35, RS 3 g/l. Certified Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and Appellation Marlborough Wine.
“Classic Grüner aroma of herby citrus, fresh pears and white pepper, with a little more ripeness than in some Austrian versions, more lower Wachau than cooler, western Wachau such as Spitzer Graben, perhaps. A touch of spice but not in the least an oaky wine – though the puncheons have given a fine-grained creamy texture. Rounded and fresh at the same time. This wine seems to be hitting its stride and, having tasted other vintages with bottle age, should age well. Long, textured (lightly chewy) finish. ”

Product Description

Blank Canvas, based in Marlborough, is the personal wine range of winemaker Matt Thomson, an award-winning international winemaking consultant, and Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson. With over 45 years of collective experience in the global wine industry, Blank Canvas is representative of Matt and Sophie’s desire to create distinctive, small-batch fine wines from exceptional vineyard sites throughout New Zealand. Vineyards are farmed by dedicated growers who all live on their vineyard and have a long-term, sustainable commitment to the land.

The much-loved Grüner Veltliner is a result of two vineyards: from the Rapaura and Brancott subregions, respectively. A combination of fermentation in puncheons and maturation on lees gives the resulting wine savoury complexity, and history shows this wine will have an impressive life ahead of it.
