“The 2024 Morgon Côte du Py has a vivid, stony bouquet with redcurrant and raspberry fruit unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a touch more sour cherry in the mix, especially on the piquant finish. Again, this is very promising and might become the edgiest of Burgaud’s 2024s.”

Product Description
Jean-Marc Burgaud has been dubbed ‘Monsieur Côte du Py’ by Bourgogne Aujourd’hui magazine and for good reason. Jean-Marc’s eponymous Beaujolais estate boasts seven hectares of vines in Morgon’s famed ‘Côte du Py’ vineyard, 4.5 of which are at the summit. These gobelet-trained vines were planted between 1940 and 1974, at a high density, using massal selection. “Gamay needs high density to reduce its natural vigour,” says Jean-Marc, whose obsession with quality means working exclusively with his own, estate-grown grapes. Coupled with what Jean-Marc calls ’la vraie vinification Beaujolaise’, this accounts for the quality and style of these striking wines. There are no set recipes here. Jean-Marc makes judgements based on an intimate knowledge of the grapes and his extensive winemaking experience. “We don’t make wine with computers, we do wine by hand!” he states emphatically.
The Côte du Py is the most famed hill of Morgon. The slope is one of the few outcrops of schist and decomposed blue rock in Beaujolais. It produces wines of intense power and greater structure than most associate with this region. Jean-Marc Burgaud owns seven hectares on the Côte du Py slope which makes his family the largest owner of vines on this famous hill. The vines were planted in 1960 with a massal selection and are gobelet trained and planted at a high density to reduce the Gamay’s natural vigour and increase concentration.
