2018 Château Léoville Barton Cru Classé St-Julien

£64.00

“Cassis, crushed plum and steeped blackberry fruit is all packed into this wine, along with tar, violet and roasted apple wood notes, plus a terrific tug of warm earth. Shows lots of energy in reserve, with a tightly knit finish pulling everything together. Cellaring required. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Highly Recommended.”

97 Points, Wine Spectator

“In this wine, fine and rich tannins partner with powerful black-plum and black-currant fruits. Densely textured while also having swathes of rich fruits, the wine shows both a firm side and one that offers total deliciousness. As it matures, both these aspects will come together. Editors’ Choice”

97 Points, Wine Enthusiast

“Sweet berries, blackberries, raspberries and violets follow through to a full body with extremely creamy, polished tannins that caress the palate. It’s really long and polished. Gorgeous finish.”

97 Points, James Suckling

Product Description

A Second Growth Classified in the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Léoville Barton belongs to one of Bordeaux’s oldest families. It is currently managed by Lilian Sartorius-Barton and by her two children, Mélanie and Damien. The technical director is François Bréhant, and the consulting oenologist is Eric Boissenot.

The Bartons are an old Irish family from Co Fermanagh. Part of the family’s history was based in the Bordeaux’ region in the 18th century when Thomas Barton, who was in France for trade, got interested in the wine and settled his first company, which would later become Barton & Guestier. He quickly became the first trader of Bordeaux (he was known as French Tom) and built up a solid reputation with a faithful clientele throughout Europe. However the law of escheatage, abolished in 1819, held him back from acquiring his own vineyard. It is only in 1821 when Hugh Barton, his grandson, purchased Château Langoa, and in 1825, a part of the domain of Léoville, that the foundations of the wine dynasty were laid in the Médoc region.

Cabernet Sauvignon (82%) and Merlot (18%), the Château Léoville-Barton 2018 is a great vintage at this Saint-Julien 2nd Grand Cru Classé.
