2016 Bargylus Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge
£39.00
“Deep, mature ruby. Lovely evolution on the nose. This has such poise and interest. It’s not light but everything is in balance. Perfect for a blind tasting! Exotic layer upon layer. GV ”
17.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW
Blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot grown at altitude inland from Syria’s main port of Lattakia.
“Still a fairly deep crimson. Heady, richly spicy nose that recalls some reds grown in nearby Lebanon. Powerful but balanced and with a streak of sweet balsamic running through it (but it’s not remotely vinegary!). Tannins nicely receded and sufficient acidity.”
The red is superb smooth and rich. It’s kind of like a style that takes one back to red wines we may have drunk more of in the 2000s, before winemakers made their wines lighter. It’s generous and charming. If I wanted to show someone who’d never had a good red wine before what they we missing, I would give them a glass of this. Perfect with with barbeques, and roasts. It’s pretty luxurious tasting. It’s a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. So you are getting something quite classical on the aroma, but with warmth, yet it holds itself so well, with the beginning of nice mature notes.
