2017 Dow’s Vintage Port

£61.00

“The 2017 Dow’s Vintage Port showed a slight reduction and required more time to really open in the glass. Typical of Dow’s it has a more backward and introspective bouquet compared to its peers, scents of blackberry, clove, wild mint, cassis and vanilla, gradually gaining more intensity with aeration. The palate is simply glorious. It is built around a compelling tannic frame that seems finer than any Dow’s I have encountered apart from the ethereal 2011. There is so much energy coiled up in this Port, a sense of symmetry that is enthralling and yet you just know that it needs to be cellared for 15-20 years for it to reveal its full potential. For serious Port-lovers. One of the vintages most cerebral offerings.”

98 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous

“Pure grape aromas that remind me of fermenting must but then goes to stems and dried flowers. Full-bodied, medium sweet with fine-grained tannins that coat your palate. Powerful and muscular yet remains agile and beautiful. Grows on your palate. Wonderful ripe fruit in the middle palate.”

98 Points, James Suckling

Product Description

In 1877 James R. Dow merged his port company with Silva & Cosens (established 1798) to form Dow’s & Co. Although the smaller of the two firms, the Dow’s name was kept due to its excellent reputation as a port shipper with particularly fine Vintage Ports. Multiple generations of the Symington family have managed the principal Dow vineyards of Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, producing many outstanding ports in the properties’ wineries. A loyal cohort of Douro farmers have also sold their grapes to the Symington family for use in Dow’s Ports, with strong relationships going back through the decades, which are reaffirmed at each year’s vintage. Dow’s continues to enjoy an unmatched reputation for Vintage Port.

An extremely rare second successive vintage declaration produced an astonishing Vintage Port with tremendous depth and intensity in colour. Fresh floral aromas with notes of rockrose are reminiscent of Senhora da Ribeira, while on the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied with gorgeous ripe fruit and fine tannins.
