2019 Finca Museum ‘Museum’ Reserva Cigales

£18.50

From dry-farmed Tempranillo bush vines that are over 70 years old, planted at 750 m. Yields are extremely low (one to 2.5 tonnes per hectare) and the soils are very poor, with layers of gravel, sand, limestone and chalk over clay. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, plus a further 12 months in bottle.
“Mid to deep crimson. Intense, though youthful, nose. Real potential for ageing here, provided you like your Tempranillo in French oak. Serious wine with just the right amount of concentration. Long. A fair price.”

Product Description

Finca Museum is based in Cigales, a small Castilla y León DO east of Valladolid. Although the area was once known for its dry rosados (or Clarete), a result of co-fermenting field blends of red and white varieties, it is the Tinta del País, a thicker-skinned Tempranillo, that excels today. As the name suggests, the winery is also a museum, boasting sculptures and paintings dating back to the 17th century. The extreme continental climate of Cigales (with temperatures ranging from 40°C in the summer to -10°C in the winter) and its soils poor in organic matter, combine to ensure both low yields and excellent wines.

The ‘Museum’ Reserva spends 24 months ageing in French and American barrels, plus a further 12 months in bottle. Very deep in colour, the wine is rich and complex with flavours of blackcurrant, liquorice and roasted hazelnuts.
