2020 Château du Tertre Margaux

£42.00

“Focused aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants with hints of dark chocolate, mint and graphite. Medium to full body, round and medium velvety tannins. Lovely berry and hazelnut character in the aftertaste. Juicy at the end with clarity. Already so attractive but give it two or three years to come together.”

95 Points, James Suckling (tasted from bottle April 2023)

“A more sculpted feel to 2020 here than at many estates in Margaux, with touches of tobacco leaf and white pepper accompanying the raspberry and wild strawberry fruits right from the first moments. There is a vivacity to the tannins, which remain muscular and a little sombre on the finish, once they have built up through the palate. Good stuff. Château du Tertre announced new owners as of January 2021, with the Helfrich family of Grands Chais de France taking over from previous owners Albada Jelgersma family on a leasing and management basis. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend.”

93 Points, Jane Anson, Decanter

“Deep crimson. Pure, ripe dark fruit and sweetness of oak on the nose. Scented and subtly floral with a touch of crushed stones. The oak is present but not dominant, bringing a chocolate sweetness to all that lovely black fruit. Deep but smooth tannins, really polished. Complete wine that finishes long and fresh.”

Product Description

Château Du Tertre dates back thousands of years to the 12th century, when the Arsac seigneury began its four-century reign.

In 1590, Jacquette, a descendant of Arsac, married Thomas de Montaigne, brother of the writer Michel de Montaigne. In the 17th century, the estate came into the hands of the de Ségur family, a key figure in the history of Bordeaux wine. They were passionate about vineyards and owned Château Calon-Ségur, Phelan-Ségur, Latour, Mouton and Lafite.

When part of the seigneury was acquired in 1724 by Pierre Mitchell, an Irish-born Bordeaux industrialist and pioneer of bottle-making in France, no one could have imagined that more than 290 years later it would retain its 52 hectares in a single block, and that in 1855 it would rank fifth in the Grands Crus Classés classification. In 1736, the first stones were laid: Pierre Mitchell had the estate built.

After achieving world renown under the direction of talented and passionate owners in the 19th century (Henri de Valade, Baron Henri de Koenigswater), it was under the direction of Philippe Capbern Gasqueton, who also owned Château Calon Ségur, that the replanting of the vineyard began in 1960 following the frost of 1956, and that the property’s renovations were to bear fruit. Following his death, the property was sold in 1997 to Eric and Marie-Louise Albada Jelgersma. A new chapter begins…

Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme in the wines of the Margaux appellation. The main structure of Château Du Tertre wines, it is responsible for all their freshness and silky, enveloping tannins. As it ages, it gains in complexity, giving the wine longevity. Renowned for its volume, roundness and suppleness, Merlot flourishes in the clay soils reserved for it. Opening the harvest, its silky, fruity notes add smoothness to Château Du Tertre’s signature wine. Complementing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Cabernet Franc brings the balance essential to its structure, and stands out for its freshness and liveliness. Its remarkable finesse offers elegant aromatic length. Finally, Petit Verdot harmonizes this aromatic palette, its spicy notes, tannic structure and aromatic power giving the wine all its subtlety.
