2021 Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino Tuscany

£24.50

Certified organic (Ecocert), sustainable (3E Equalitas). Fermented in concrete tanks and aged in large old oak casks.
“Roses, hibiscus and wet leather. Bold red-drenched acidity leads the attack followed by a flurry of autumn leaves, wet and mulched and even a little bonfire smoky. Under all that, the deep raw-red tang of foraged fruits and iron. Hawthorn berries, pitanga berries. A tangle of piercing sweetness and moreish bitterness.”

Product Description

San Polo was purchased by Marilisa Allegrini in 2006, who has since invested heavily in the estate. This investment is now evident in the ever-increasing quality of the wines. Situated in the eastern part of Montalcino, the San Polo estate comprises 22 hectares of which 16 are planted under vine. They produce classic wines, with a bit more weight than those made in the north of Montalcino. The winery has been certified sustainable, by the respected Casa Clima organisation, since 2013. It has also been organic certified from 2017 and vegan certified from 2019.

The grapes for this Rosso di Montalcino come from three hectares of vineyard planted in 2000. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, facing south and south-east, with chalky clay soils. The vines are spur-cordon trained and planted at a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. Yields are on average 49 hectolitres per hectare.
