2022 Wieninger Pinot Noir Select

£29.00

“Medium carmine garnet colour, a purple touch, broad ochre rim. Delicate herbal savouriness, red forest berries, fresh tangerine zest, some raspberry confit. Juicy, elegant, red cherries, firm tannins, mineral aftertaste, lingers long.”

93 Points, Falstaff

“The 2022 Pinot Noir Select was grown in the calcareous soils of Bisamberg with a smaller portion of Nussberg and spent a year in 228, 300, 500, and 600-liter French oak barrels, with around 20% new wood. Pure cherry fruit is ripe and aromatic on the nose, mixed with subtle smoke. The palate is fine, with beautifully dense, darkish tannins. It brims with freshness and strikes an elegant balance without heat or heaviness. This wine is very well done in 2022. The finish is filled with freshness. (Bone-dry)”

Product Description

Fritz Wieninger is considered a pioneer of the ‘New Vienna’ wine movement, combining a sense of modernity with the traditions of the region and his family, who have been making wine for over 100 years.

Weingut Wieninger comprises 50 hectares of biodynamically-grown vines on two main sites, ‘Bisamberg’ (35 hectares) and the smaller ‘Nussberg’ (15 hectares), separated by the Danube River. The drier and sunnier ‘Bisamberg’ is characterised by light, sandy loess soil, creating fresh wines with vibrant acidity. In contrast, ‘Nussberg’ is planted on shell and limestone soils with a high clay content, giving its wines greater richness and deeper fruit aromas.

Grapes for the Pinot Noir Select are mainly sourced from Wieninger’s Bisamberg vineyards, with a portion coming from the Nussberg site. Compared to Nussberg, Bisamberg sees on average 20% less rain and 20% more wind and sun which, along with its distinct soil composition, results in expressive and complex wines. Nussberg’s ancient alpine bedrock subsoil, which is interspersed with quartz veins, lends a creamy texture and pronounced minerality.
