2023 Blank Bottle Master Of None
£24.00
“Master of None is a catch-all blend of red and white grapes, combining Cinsault, Grenache and Pinot Noir with 20% Chardonnay, Fernão Pires, Marsanne, Palomino, Riesling, Roussanne and Verdelho. BLANKbottle’s biggest production red, it’s halfway to being a rosé, with layers of rooibos tea, hibiscus, plum and wild strawberry and fine-grained tannins.”
As Pieter’s wines started making international waves in 2017 one British critic questioned whether it was possible for the Blank Bottle winery to make 40 completely different high quality wines in a vintage. The critic’s opinion was that to achieve great wines a producer should focus and specialise. If Pieter owned the land his grapes come from he may have been able to agree, but not being in control of what the landowners had planted and only able to buy small parcels he had to take a different winemaking approach.
The article came out just as Pieter was blending the first vintage of a madcap blend of both red and white varietals, about 10 different varietals in all (that has now increased) but the wine didn’t have a name yet. Not taking himself too seriously and inspired by the critic Pieter named this wine Master Of None.
