2023 Errazuriz Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay

£18.00

“From the pioneer of the Aconcagua Costa sub-region, this Chardonnay stood out for its typicity and quality at a strong-value price point. The vineyard lies just 12km from the ocean, planted on schist and slate soils. Although 2023 was, broadly speaking, a relatively warm vintage in Chile, the cooling Humboldt current delayed ripening here, making harvest later than usual. Winemaking follows the classic, timeless style of Errazuriz, with the wine aged for almost a year in used French oak barrels and foudres. Amanda Barnes MW: Mineral nose with inviting salinity. Bright and balanced, with lively acidity and a wonderful coastal character. Florencia Gomez: Lively and juicy with a gentle grip that adds interest and complexity to the intense and juicy citrusy core. Benjamin Gubbins: A lemongrass and floral nose, quite stony. Zesty lemon and lemongrass on the palate, which has a tight mineral feel, along with gentle lime citrus notes. Nicely crisp and expressive.”

95 Points, Decanter

“For Aconcagua Costa, vines are selected from slate soils in the Manzanar Vineyard, about 12 kilometers from the sea in the Aconcagua Valley. These are younger plants, mostly about 10 years old, that could potentially go into the top chardonnay, Pizarras, but due to the age of the vines they do not yet provide the necessary concentration. This “little” Pizarras, however, is an excellent way to approach the chardonnays from this terroir. This has a depth of fruit flavors, some spices and herbs, and the texture is creamy in a chardonnay that is both fresh and succulent.”

Product Description

A very exciting new release from Errazuriz. The 2023 Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay is a stunning vintage from this wine. With a highest ever rating of 95 Points from Decanter for a wine priced so low, this also offers exceptional value.

The grapes for the Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay are sourced from the Aconcagua Costa vineyard located 12 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Planted by Viña Errázuriz in 2005 and 2009, the soil is composed by a thin layer of loamy texture and placed on a base of clay and metamorphic rock (slate/schist), providing the mineral notes present in the wines that are grown in these vineyards.

Grapes were handpicked in the early morning between February 8th and February 20th and carefully transported to the winery, where they were whole-cluster pressed and cold decanted in stainless steel tanks. The use of native yeasts along with the larger number of strains of yeasts during a wild fermentation contributes greater complexity to the wine. The juice was fermented in used French oak barrels during 15 to 20 days, and then underwent 45% malolactic fermentation. Then the wine was aged for 11 months in used French oak barrels and 10% in foudres.
