“The 2023 Wild Sauvignon leads with a layered nose of crushed nuts, pineapple husk, liquorice and white chocolate. On the palate, the wine is creamy and spicy, with lashings of concentrated fruit flavour and length throughout the finish. This wine routinely cellars with exceptional grace, and this vintage appears to be no different. The 2023 growing season was cool and wet, although the presence of the mountain range, which effectively divides the region in half, had a positive impact on the Awatere Valley, to the east of the main Wairau. While the 2023 season will be forever etched onto the hearts of the producers in Hawkes Bay (and the North Island in general) as the year of Cyclone Gabrielle, the South Island fared much better, and the wines in general have been lovely, detailed things, as this is.”

“Openly aromatic with both classic Sauvignon Blanc fruit – grassy and herbal with a hint of cassis leaf – but also a creamy/mealy impression allied to a stony note. Unusual combination of creamy and mineral with the merest hint of oak spice. Lovely texture from the lees and the oak, gently chewy, rich, still very youthful and fresh and with a salty aftertaste. This is a wine that you can enjoy now but which ages very well.”

“A wine for pausing and taking it all in. This is alluring with its passionfruit gels, tangerine and lemon myrtle oil. Some frangipani and candle wax. Dried hay and barley crop. The palate extends the robust flavour of grilled nuts and manuka honey, with good skin and oak texture. Some bitter orange on the finish. A wine with lots of detail and complexity.”

Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, an early pioneer in Marlborough winemaking whose ground-breaking wines helped put this small New Zealand region on the world wine map. The name ‘Greywacke’ was adopted by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, nodding to the prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the vineyard’s soils. ‘Greywacke’ is a sedimentary rock widely found in Marlborough, consisting of hard grey sandstone and darker mudstone layers.
Greywacke’s signature ‘Wild Sauvignon’ is arguably Kevin Judd’s flagship white wine. This alternative New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc style is fermented in old oak barrels using indigenous yeast. This use of indigenous yeast results in a lengthy fermentation process that can last almost a year after harvest. Yet it is a process that rewards patience, resulting in a textured white of considerable depth and opulence, with a lingering savoury finish of tarragon and lightly smoked tea.
