“Fantastic bouquet, complex and layered with scents of a softer barrel ferment approach, layers of lees with a core of ripe fruit suggesting green melon and cape gooseberry, each and sandy mineral ideas. Other fruits of grapefruit and apple emerge as the wine warms and opens out. On the palate a quietly energetic wine with complexities from citrus and lees, some barrel ferment then apple and melon. Some very tannins and white spice, sandy soils and lees complexities deliver a wine of charms and power. Best drinking from late 2025 through 2031+.”

“The 2023 Abstract Sauvignon Blanc is from three rows in the Holdaway vineyard, and this three-row section is, and always has been, unirrigated. The wine is creamy, nutty and detailed, with a chalky texture, a floral nuance within and layers of mustard seed, fennel, cassis and lavender. This is a beautiful, thoughtful wine. The fruit is handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, and the free-run juice is sent straight to puncheons without being settled first. The fermentation initiates and goes through with indigenous yeast, then the wine is settled and not stirred and goes to bottle unfiltered.”

Founded in 2012, Blank Canvas is a collaboration between Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson and award-winning winemaking consultant Matt Thomson. Over 45 years of collective experience, in the global wine industry, has enabled them to seek out exceptional single vineyards, while their mutual love of the world’s fine wines has formed the inspiration for Blank Canvas. Together they craft exciting, small batch wines that are at the forefront of New Zealand’s fine wine scene.
Although they work with vineyards and growers across New Zealand, Blank Canvas’ focus is firmly rooted in their home region of Marlborough. The Abstract | Three Rows Sauvignon Blanc, handpicked from a dry-farmed parcel within the Holdaway Vineyard, is fermented with indigenous yeast in seasoned French oak puncheons and bottled without fining or filtration. The resulting texture and complexity draw parallels to Bordeaux Blanc from Graves.
The Abstract has an intense and seductive perfume of blackcurrant, white florals and subtle lemongrass, while the palate is savoury with a flinty minerality. The wine displays a sumptuous richness and complexity with beautiful balance and elegance.
