2020 Burn Cottage ‘Burn Cottage Vineyard’ Central Otago Pinot Noir

£49.00

“The 2020 Pinot Noir Burn Cottage Vineyard is not a wine that I want to deconstruct into its components as it exemplifies balance, harmony and completeness, and I want to drink a lot of it. It is a wine that is the sum of its parts rather than its individual elements. It is young and can be approached now, but deserves bottle aging. It is full-bodied and suave but being from Central Otago – at the bottom of the earth next stop penguins – it has a sense of coolness and freshness, enlivening its entirety and retaining a sense of melodic direction among the mellow bass sections. There’s a very small percentage of whole clusters (7%) that combine with the natural garrigue notes of Central Otago Pinot to provide herbal lift alongside pure cherry fruit and carefully judged oak.”

Product Description

Burn Cottage was founded in 2002 by Marquis Sauvage and Ted Lemon of Sonoma Coast’s famous Littorai estate. What was once a sheep paddock was transformed into one of Central Otago’s finest Pinot Noir sites, earning Burn Cottage its reputation as one of the top producers in the region. Today, Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate, 2023) describes them as “a superstar producer—an asset for the region and indeed the country (and the New World in general).”

Originally planted in 1999, this North East facing vineyard covers 5.8 hectares of Pinot Noir, all of which are guyot trained. The site’s low vigour soils are comprised of lake-bed/river silts, loams and quartz sands, along with quartz and schist gravels, with pockets of pedogenic lime, a unique attribute of semi arid soils. Burn Cottage has the unique distinction of being the first and only Central Otago estate that has been biodynamic since day one, Ted Lemon’s one stipulation for his involvement.
