2022 The Foundry Viognier
£18.00
Viognier from a vineyard just 6 km from False Bay so it gets cool Atlantic Ocean winds which, winemaker Chris Williams says, keeps the wine restrained. Fermentation in old barrels.
“Cobnuts and rhubarb-lime candy. Daphne flowers and then a little note of Darjeeling tea. Pineapple. So much here! Flavours keep tripping over each other. Straw on the end. Bauble-shiny acidity. So, so different from bog-standard Viognier. This could convince me that all Viognier should be grown within reach of cold ocean winds. GV”
Founded in 2001 by Chris Williams and friend James Reid with a tiny budget The Foundry has grown into a tour de force of the South African wine scene.
The Viognier is grown on a single vineyard, South Westerly slope about 6 km from False Bay which enjoys cool maritime on shore breezes from the Atlantic. The soils are granite-clay loams which restrict yield and allow for retention of acidity and varietal aroma.
