2023 Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay

£32.00

“An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 25% mlf. A very bright green gold. Attractive scents of ripe white pears and nectarines, lemon curd and just the right amount of flint. Packs a punch on the saline, gently textured, gently chewy palate. Great stuff and the perfect entrée to the year’s superb lineup of single-vineyard chardonnays.”

95 Points, Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

“This lovely, youthful, pale Chardonnay has a gentle sapidity, a delicacy and a fragility, a lightness of touch, but is deceptive; there’s intensity here, too, and fine acidity, and wonderful length that will blossom even more over time.”

Product Description

Giant Steps was founded by Margaret River native Phil Sexton in 1997. With the help of winemaker Steve Flamsteed, Giant Steps forged a reputation as one of the Yarra Valley’s most exciting producers, crafting cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from single sites. Since Mel Chester joined as Head of Winemaking and Viticulture in 2021, the winery has reached even greater heights and was named ‘Winery of the Year’ in the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion. In the words of Campbell Mattinson in the Halliday Wine Companion, “It’s been an outstanding winery for a long time, but the combination of energy and expertise – and no doubt plenty more besides – that winemaker Melanie Chester has brought since she arrived at the winery in November 2021 has frankly been breathtaking.

Rather than focusing on single-vineyard expressions, Giant Steps’ Yarra Valley wines seek to provide exemplary, regional examples of Yarra Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Made using hand-picked fruit from estate vineyards, the wines are produced using indigenous yeasts, gravity-flow winemaking and minimal fining and filtration.
