2023 Vie di Romans Sauvignon Blanc Piere

£39.50

“Intriguing and decidedly complex, its almost peppery nose reveals notes of black tea leaves, patchouli, sage, bay leaves, rosemary, and bergamot. Numerous woody nuances enliven the secondary aroma. Medium body, elegant structure, and decidedly noble in the graceful sip, it displays dynamic drinkability and great enjoyment.”

94 Points, Raffaele Vecchione, WinesCritic

“The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Piere is a spice bomb with a savory, beguiling bouquet that blends sweet green peas with basil, rosemary and lime-laced green apples. It mixes a pleasant inner sweetness with citrus-infused orchard fruits and crisp mineral tones to create a reverberation of zesty tension. Long and staining yet wickedly fresh, it leaves a subtle twang of young kiwi. This 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Piere is incredibly unique and impossible to ignore.”

93 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous

“Bright light straw colour with a green hue. Nuanced nose combining fine oak and toast with herb-infused stone fruit, lemongrass, mint and pistachio. Bright palate with good density and layers, a vivivd freshness, mild creaminess from lees-ageing with fine extract, cirsp and pure fruit followed by a great persistency.”

94 Points, Andreas Larsson, Tasted

Product Description

Vie di Romans are based in the heart of DOC Friuli Isonzo (Mariano del Friuli), in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where winemaker Gianfranco Gallo’s 65 hectares of vineyards produce about 250,000 bottles a year. Here, the well-drained soil is stony, glacial and rich in minerals, soaking up rainfall like a sponge. An easterly wind ensures cool night temperatures to temper the hot summer days, with a large diurnal range slowing ripening and allowing the grapes to accumulate flavour. This, along with the low yields that Gallo achieves and his proclivity for picking grapes once fully mature, results in single-vineyard wines of great intensity and richness. As a result, Gallo releases the Vie di Romans wines a year later than the local norm.

The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the ‘Piere’ vineyard and is a round, fuller style of Sauvignon with a freshness characteristic of this region. All the Vie di Romans wines have the hallmark of excellent individuality, which sets Gianfranco Gallo apart from the crowd.

Fruit comes from the 12.5-hectare Piere vineyard in the commune of Mariano del Friuli, which sits 33 meters above sea level. The average age of the vines is 21 years, and they are planted with a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. Exposure is north-south with single Guyot training. The soil is well-drained and has a gravelly texture with a mix of silica-rich clay and conglomerate.
